Indian River

Indian River

The Indian River is one of Dominica’s 365 rivers and just 2 minutes drive from Riverside Hotel Picard. It is one of the widest in Dominica. You can also enjoy a walk which will take about 15 minutes from Riverside Hotel Picard.  It is mostly known for its complete immersion into nature, winding through the coastal mangrove swamps on the rain forest island of Dominica.

Indian River boat rides are one of the tourist attractions of Dominica. Some of the scenes of “Pirates of the Caribbean” were filmed here. It was named “Indian River” after the settlements of the Kalinagos, formerly known as Carib Indians, that existed on the river banks.

This boat tour along the beautiful Indian River should definitely be on your itinerary. Local guides wait by the bridge at the Indian River between Portsmouth and Picard.  You can hire one of these guides with their colorful boats to row you silently along the river. As you travel quietly along the swampy river banks, you will observe the many types of wildlife and plant life found here.

The guides are very knowledgeable about nature as well as the history of the Indians that used this river to transport goods for trading with sailors. The asking price to row you and a friend on this amazing ride is about EC$50 per person. The trip will take about 1 -1.5 hours.

The tour also includes a short stop at the Bush Bar, where you can have a drink and a look around the area. There is quite an atmosphere found here at the swamp edge.

The abundance of gnarly trees and dense canopy cover found along this small, winding tributary of the Indian River, bathes the whole place in semi-darkness. Throughout the boat tour on the Indian River, you are able to observe species that you may have never seen in the wild, including iguanas and multiple species of waterfowl.

To access the Indian River you are required to have an Eco-Tourism site-pass, which can be bought  for a one-day single visit  or for one week. You can use the week pass for all nature sites including repeat visits during the week.

The front desk clerk at the Riverside Hotel Picard will advise you where to purchase a site-pass for US$5 for one day or US$12 for a week.
