The Hike to Middleham Falls Dominica

There are a few starting points hikers can choose to start their journey like the point in Cochrane. Beware as this point is infamously known for its bad stench!

The most common starting point is the point located in the elevated village of Laudat.

Laudat is an area that is above Trafalgar, high up in the mountains.

To get to the starting point in Laudat however, one typically either drives or catches a bus from Roseau (the capital) to Laudat. The route starts from the end of a side street off of the  Laudat to Roseau mainroad.

It is also quite common for hikers to begin their hike from the mainroad to the starting point which takes 15 minutes. This makes for a good warm up!

There will also be a sign pointing you toward the falls which you can follow.

Middleham Falls Dominica is a pleasant trail. The hike is about 1.5 miles and will take about 2 to 3 hours from the starting point, to the falls and back.

  • The starting point of Middleham Falls Dominica trail.

The trail starts on a narrower and muddy path. This path immediately starts to incline on wooden steps for a fairly long time until the path levels out.

As the trail continues up the hill, you will start to climb more wooden stairs. As you gradually make your way up the trail you will encounter several twists and turns as you approach the ridge, where it tends to get fairly steep.

The trail contains numerous shallow pools and streams.

As you trek through the rainforest you will be able to see the Waterfall through the trees.  Bit further on, you will begin to see a sign pointing out that the trail continues left when you’ve crossed a little bridge – This bridge is located directly over another river ->This is where the path starts to descend to Middleham Falls Dominica!

It’s also got a little stream that you have to cross before getting to the falls and you might get your shoes wet if you don’t want to.

The decline continues gradually for about 15 minutes until you are greeted by the picturesque tumbling falls!

There’s also a surrounding mist in the air caused by the forceful crashing of the water into the pool, which creates an eerie mystique. Also makes for a spectacular background for pictures!

Although the pool can be quite cold, it’s still very swimmable. The best way to test this out will be to uphold tradition by cliff jumping off the side of the roaring waterfall, and plunging into the cold pool waters.

Dominica Boiling Lake

Dominica Boiling Lake

The hike to the Dominica Boiling Lake is definitely worth it, but get ready for a challenging climb. The trail is steep and winding with rocky parts. Make sure you have enough water and snacks with you, as there is no food or drink available on the trail.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, a great place to go is Dominica’s Boiling Lake. This 200 foot wide boiling lake is one of the second largest in the world. Be sure to check the weather conditions before heading out, and come prepared for the heat. We also advise you to go with a professional tour guide.

History of Dominica Boiling Lake

Mr. Watt and Dr. Nicholls, two Englishmen working in Dominica, were the first to record the sighting of the Lake in 1870. The water temperature is in the range of 180 to 197 degrees Fahreinheit (82-91.5 Celsius) along the edges. They were only capable of measuring the temperature on the edges as they could not access the centre of the boiling lake. The depth of the boiling lake is greater 195ft (59m)

Overview

Dominica Boiling Lake is a once in a lifetime experience, offering a remarkable view of the extraordinary Valley of Desolation, as well as a hike through enchanting mountains and ever changing forests. The valley is an alien like rock formation of clay, grey and white rock, marked by calcium and sulphur deposits and inhabited by interesting wildlife.

Dominica Boiling Lake Trail

There is a gradual climb on the path which persists for about 45 minutes, after you’ve departed from the starting point, Titou Gorge, (1,690ft).

Through out this hike you will start to descend to the Breakfast River, which is typically the first stop for hikers to gather their bearings and drink some water.. Although this climb has a tendency to get muddy, you will come across lookout points that look directly down at the gorge.

Valley of Desolation

Time taken: Approx 1 hour

Until about 2,500ft, the climb becomes significantly more vertical upon your ascension of Breakfast River. When you’ve reached about 3,168ft, you will finally encounter a steady climb. This is typically a good point to stop and catch your breath. This clearing offers breathtaking 360 views of the surrounding lush mountain ranges.

Although the trail continues for about 20 minutes, this tends to be the least strenuous part of the hike. It is slightly downhill and you will soon reach the top of the Valley of Desolation. This also acts as a lookout point. You are able to see steam rising from the Lake itself, where the trail begins to climb deeply into the valley.

It is also important to note that the trail starts to become vague as you’re crossing the stream. But a seasoned tour guide would be able to advise you accordingly. The valley contains a lot of hot water pools. Hikers are able to take a break to enjoy swimming in therapeutic warm water. From the Valley, it’s generally uphill.

There comes a point where one can look down on another area of ‘Desolation’. The Dominica Boiling Lake is just minutes away!

The Boiling Lake

One needs to be very aware of the lake. It has steep sides and while the view from the hillside above is stunning, the rocks are often slippery which can be extremely hazardous when hiking. Always be extremely weary when visiting this boiling lake and approach with caution extreme caution. All of that being said , congratulations, you’ve reached the Lake! The length is approximately 200ft (63m) across. Also there is an intriguing mixture of small stones, pumice and clay at the side of the lake.

Trafalgar Falls Dominica Background

he Trafalgar Falls are tributaries to Roseau River, and are very close to the capital city Roseau.

The twin falls are fed by two different rivers. The long, wide Breakfast River feeds the taller, skinnier Falls known as Mama Falls. Both falls have interesting pools and cascades that make for a great hike to see them.

  • Papa:  the towering waterfall in Trafalgar Falls, Dominica, is a beautiful sight. The Papa also has an impressive physique – he’s slightly more svelte than other waterfalls in the area and stands over 125 feet tall. Fed by Fresh Water Lake via Ti Tou Gorge, he provides a source of fresh water for visitors to enjoy.
  • Mama: at Trafalgar Falls, Dominica The source of Mama’s robust girth is the Breakfast River. This is the same river that acts as the first, best stop for an early snack on the hike to Dominica’s Boiling Lake. This lake holds the title of second largest fumarole (hot) lake in the world thanks in part to the island’s legendary volcanic activity. With that in mind, it’s no wonder that the Mama is well fed.

Hike to Trafalgar Falls Dominica

To experience the Falls of Trafalgar in Dominica, you’ll need to travel a short distance from the village of Trafalgar. Its about 20 minutes away from the capital, Roseau. The entire area that is surrounding the falls is covered in trees and enchanting greenery of the mountain rocks, giving way to the Roseau Valley’s rustic beauty. The hike is considered to be one of the easy ones because its commonly hiked by amateur hikers. The reason for this is because the hike is only a 10-15 minute walk from the trafalgar centre to the view point on a well maitained walkway and visitors are rewarded with the stunning views of the Trafalgar Falls Dominica

Hikers are bound to be greeted by some of Dominica’s most reknowned natural trees/plants along the trail such as:

  • Helliconia: A distant cousin to the local “Banana Leaf“, Dominica has two of these native species. These can be spotted along the trail, containing a either red ir yellow flowers, which gives the trail a natural sprark! —> Additionally, the leaves are mostly used by the Kalinago Indians for Indians for their famous Lawouman baskets.
  • Trumpet Tree: Although this has a somewhat hollow trunk, the leaf scars are still qiote prominent.
  • Kalken plant: This plant has thick and round leaves, and resembles a star.

  • Mother Falls are considered the most easily accesible of the falls, but is also the most fierce and strongest. Because of mama’s gentle nature, its easy to forget to still take pre caution as the boulders can get quite slippery at times when hiking. Visitors may find the water to be quite warm, as the Mother Falls is fed by the breakfast river, which runs thorugh the boiling lake. Measuring at about 75 feet tall, mother falls is also home to a natural sulphur pool which can be enjoyed when you get to the top!
  • Father Falls measures at around 125 feet and plunges into a pool which is fed by hot springs. As you walk the trail, note the orange coloration in the small spring that flows across the trail. This is caused by iron compounds in the clay and not by sulphur. Sometimes the water is hot, and this is further evidence that Dominica’s fiery core still burns brightly.

As you step out into the open, the vibrant colors of the Begonias and Wild Anthuriums will capture your attention. Depending on the time of year, you may also see Giant Columbines and Monardella.

Don’t forget to check out the breadfruit tree just past the base of the first set of steps. This delicious fruit was first brought to the Caribbean by Captain Bligh in 1791 as a cheap source of food to feed the African slaves.

If you’re looking for more of a challenge, consider hiking to the hot springs below Father Falls. Either way, be sure to take a guide if you want to explore all the attractions at this scenic spot! Also be sure to bring your cameras because you will be in for a treat once you make the top!
