Dominica freshwater lake is the largest and most accessible of the country’s four lakes. It is in in the village of Laudat, and is easily reachable by car on a well-maintained paved road, which is open to cars and hikers alike. Visitor facilities and a Visitor Centre are available by the lake.The road ascends uphill beyond the settlement.
The lake provides water for Titou Gorge, Trafalgar Falls and Roseau River. The lake also is able to provide water to generate electricity.
The Trois Pitons National Park is a also a beautiful place to visit, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The lake is in the centre of the park, and from its trails you can see Morne Micotrin, Morne Nicholls, Morne Watt, Morne Jaune and Morne Anglais.
Dominica Freshwater Lake is a beautiful location to enjoy nature. It has a surface area of approximately 9.8 acres and is at an elevation of 2500 feet above sea level. The area around the lake receives heavy rainfall, almost 30 feet per year, making it one of the wettest places on Dominica.
Due to the almost constant rainy weather and its location, the vegetation around the lake consists of both upper montane and cloud forest plants. Among these are ferns, mosses, kaklen (Clusia mangle), mountain palms, bromeliads, colourful gingers, heliconias and orchids.
Tilapia live in this freshwater lake; a tropical freshwater fish belonging to the cichlid family that was introduced a long time ago time ago!
You will need to take your time on this hike. It will take around 1.5 hours to walk around Dominica Freshwater Lake and another hour each way from there to Boeri Lake. Be careful of the slippery rocks and steps; it’s better to take your time so you can really enjoy the sights and sounds of this beautiful area. It will be worth it!

Traditionally, you will be starting your hike at the small visitor centre. Here you can pick up some refreshments and snacks if you’re feeling peckish. First you will take a short journey through the quaint village of Grand Fond.
Afterwords, you will weave your way across the stunning island meandering between the towering mountains and taking in breathtaking views of both the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.
Taking a leisurely stroll in a counter-clockwise direction will give you the best view of the sights before continuing onwards to Boeri Lake.
After reaching to the top of a small ridge, you will see panoramic views over the surrounding peaks even in cloudy conditions. Be sure to wait for a few minutes if it starts to cloud over, as weather conditions can change quickly on this stunning trail! Dominica Fresh Water Lake is truly a sight to behold!

You’ll come down to the other side of the ridge via a steep section of steps. Some of these steps are made of wooden logs so be careful, as they tend to be slippery! Once you continue hiking you will be led to the most lush and fertile sections of the rainforest. The remaining stretch of the trail leads through some sections of rainforest with greenery and vegetation that seems truly mediaeval.
Continue on until you reach the Valley Road and turn right if you want to continue to Boeri Lake.
